I am one half Polish on my mother’s side, coincidentally, the food side. While my mother was born in Detroit, her parents were off the boat Polish. My mom was raised in Northeast Minneapolis, which probably still is a Polish neighborhood. All that having been said, my mom cooked only “galumpkis” (cabbage rolls) but they were terrific. My grandmother made only one “authentic” Polish dish, chicken stewed in a sour-creamy paprika-flavored sauce, and it was great. Oh, well, we had the cucumbers in sour cream and pickled herring all the time, and sausages were shipped in from Minneapolis each Christmas, kielbasa, blood sausage and liver sausage – these my dad picked up at the local REA depot one or two days before Christmas. Recently, a bunch of us tried the Polish place out in Santa Monica – mixed results, not that great, in my opinion. I think we will schedule a visit to Polka. This website makes it all seem too good to be true.
My Polish mom lives walking distance from another Polish restaurant clear across L.A. We tried the other place when it opened, and I got my mom to try it one more time decades later–she (really they) convinced me not to bother again. So I found Polka online and now we drive across the L.A. basin to eat authentic Polish cooking every time I visit. Over a lifetime, I’ve only seen my mom eat pierogi she made (had to stop by the time she reached her nineties–but I grew up eating the best food in the world, Polish, of course), or that my kids and I made for her after she could no longer cook. Now, with a to go order of a couple of dozen after we enjoy dinner, I get to leave her with a freezer full of Polka pierogi, to pay her back for all the great food she made us–and to know that the most picky Polish eater will, in fact, eat it. Not to mention the mountain of leftovers from their humongous dinner portions. It’s the REAL DEAL, enough that it gets me down to SoCal to visit her more often.

Perfect just what I was looking for! .
Wow!
Pierogi, Kotlet, and Nalesniki were amazing! Great quality food and large portions along with a nice atmosphere.
Definitely coming back for more!
